Westgate Tunnel Viaduct Cleaning

THE CLIENT:

As part of the West Gate Tunnel Project, our client needed to conduct an internal structural investigation of the Footscray Road on and off ramp viaduct structure.

THE CHALLENGE:

Early investigations found evidence of a biological hazard which was due to a build-up of pigeon excrement from infiltration over many years. A focus on planning was imperative in order to control the high level of risk involved in performing the cleaning task at hand.

THE RANGEDALE SOLUTION:

In consultation with the client, a collaborated methodology was implemented to manage the risks and hazards of the biological matter, restricted working space, access and egress challenges resulting in the viaduct being classified as a confined space. Prior to work starting, specialised PPE was procured, and rescue plans were rehearsed multiple times, ensuring all personnel were equipped to perform an emergency rescue if required. Once all parties were comfortable with the controls in place to manage all hazards and risk, cleaning commenced.

The cleaning process involved major mobilisation and set up involving a highly trained 6-person crew, industrial combination high velocity vacuum unit, up to 300m of vacuum hose inside the viaduct, specialised confined space entry equipment, standby breathing apparatus and rescue equipment, radio communication, and a task specific permit system.

THE OUTCOME:

During these specialised works, Rangedale had the foresight to record all atmospheric data through our CSE permit system to provide evidence to our client and the asset owner for classification in the case of future works in this space whilst installing preventative netting to reduce future infiltration. In collaboration with both parties’ safety teams, experienced supervisors, and management, knowledge, and experience were shared to execute the task safely, efficiently whilst capturing data to provide project learnings for better future outcomes with zero harm to people, assets and the environment. Overall, a great outcome.
